Winch Line Decisions - Solid Cable Or Righteous Rope? [FourWheeler Magazine 4x4 Truck Tech]
Winch Line Decisions - Solid Cable Or Righteous Rope?
Winch Line Decisions - Solid Cable Or Righteous Rope? - Four Wheeler Magazine
Which Is Right For You

Since the first synthetic rope spooled around a winch drum, people have been vigorously arguing both for and against the new-age recovery line. For many, steel is simply the classic cable that never lets them down. But in these modern times of lighter-is-better thinking, even seasoned wheeling veterans are drawn in by the seemingly more user-friendly rope. Both appear to have some pretty clear pros and cons, and while rope is trending better than steel these days, it hasn’t taken over the market. Editor Cappa is sold on synthetic, while Technical Editor Mansour is hanging tough with steel. Can either really be right or wrong? Read their arguments and make your call.

Saying Farewell To Our Versatile Long-Term Fullsize

Over the last year we have used our 2012 Pickup Truck of The Year winner, the Ram Power Wagon, like the fullsized Swiss Army knife that it is. It’s been on long road trips, hauled 10,000-pound trailers over steep mountain passes, blasted along desert two-tracks at 80 mph with a bed load of firewood and camp gear, crawled over large boulders, pushed through snowdrifts, waded in mud, and powered its way through towering sand dunes. Our Power Wagon has been perhaps the most versatile truck we have ever had in the fleet (since the last Power Wagon). Its ability to do work and still play make it an extremely desirable truck for someone that can only afford to have one vehicle.

AxleTech
I’ve received a few questions about the AxleTech 4000 axles that were mentioned in our feature article, “U.S. Military Spotter’s Guide,” (Mar. ’13). Jeff Armfield, director of global product line management for AxleTech International, was nice enough to give me a bit more information and tips on the new heavyweight military axles.

Four Seasons With The F-C II All-Terrain

Nine months ago we fit our ’05 Dodge Power Wagon with a set of Dick Cepek Radial F-C II tires. Since then we’ve traveled thousands of miles in a variety of conditions in all four seasons. This long-term test has provided us with a comprehensive view of what the tire is and isn’t capable of.

Which Traction Aid is Right For You

Installing a locking differential into your 4x4 is one of the best upgrades you can do. Understanding that a locker is what allows your wheels to spin at the same speed (no more one-wheel-peel), installing one (or two) in your rig can boost its off-road performance tremendously. Getting the right type of locker for your rig is just as important. For the sake of this argument, we’ve split the locker debate into two camps: selectable and automatic.

How To Get Unstuck

There’s an old saying along the lines of there is a time and place for everything. In off-roading, that saying rings true in many ways-especially when it comes to vehicle recovery. Making sure you are using the right tools and methods to get the job done off-road will save you time and headaches, and it will be safer for everyone involved. In this issue we’ve covered many of the recovery tools and techniques to help you get out of a bind. In this article, we are focusing on when it’s best to use the two most common extraction implements—a winch and recovery strap.

Get Unstuck!

If there is one part of our hobby that we all dislike, it’s getting stuck. Rarely will being stuck come at a convenient time, and in the digital age of cellphone cameras, your mishap will likely be a memory that your buddies won’t soon let you forget. The fact of the matter is regardless of your talents behind the wheel or how unlimited your buggy is, we all get stuck. From rollovers to bottomless mud pits, Mother Nature is going to best your 4x4 sooner or later.

Who Builds The Best Torque Wrench For Less

The torque wrench is probably the most often-used specialty tool. If you’re like us, you may still have your first torque wrench; we got our Craftsman ½-inch drive clicker-style as a Christmas present in 1972. It is the oldest tool in our toolbox. But veteran status might not necessarily mean it’s accurate. We contacted Cornerstone Metrology in Van Nuys, California, a company that does calibration work for both industrial and individual mechanics. We needed a highly accurate test procedure to measure our torque wrenches. Director of Quality Keith Chauvie showed us the digital scale that was accurate to within 0.10 of a pound, which suited our test just fine since we weren’t going to be working on the Mars rover.

A Dynamic Diesel With Modern Refinement - And Still Trail Rated

In our ever-changing world of technology and late-breaking news, the next best thing always seems to be just moments away. Auto manufacturers aren’t oblivious to this reality, and have reacted in ways once unheard of. Take for example the ’14 Jeep Grand Cherokee. For those up on their new vehicle releases, you may recall that it was only a little over 2½ years ago that Jeep completely revamped the Grand. In what appears to be a move from the iDroid-berry phone playbook, Jeep has released the newest version of the Grand in record time. Luckily, there is much more to this fresh-faced SUV than a few software upgrades.

The Everyday JK's Final Review

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is known as one of, if not the most capable, factory 4x4 on the planet. Taking top prize in the 2012 Four Wheeler of the Year competition only added to the Wrangler’s lore and legacy. For roughly a year now, we’ve pushed the 2012 FWOTY-winning ’12 Rubicon two-door to, and sometimes beyond, its limits. Acting as a family shuttle, cross-country explorer, and a rough-and-tumble wheeler, our long-tern Wrangler has had to wear many hats. In this final testing quarter, we hit the open road again for some more backcountry exploring and sightseeing.

More Than A Celebrity Mall Crawler

Forget everything you thought you knew about the Range Rover, especially the painfully ingrained image of it being nothing more than a road queen used to cart celebutards through Los Angeles traffic. Does nearly 12 inches of ground clearance and a 36-inch fording depth sound like a street creep to you? Let us put it in perspective, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (considered the most capable factory SUV ever offered) only has 10.2 inches of ground clearance and a 30-inch fording depth. Having said all that, we recently had the chance to get behind the wheel of the ‘13 Range Rover both on- and off-road in northern Arizona and southern Utah. We were surprised by what we learned.

Road Trip To Rockcrawler

During the last two quarters our 2012 Pickup Truck of the Year winner has spent nearly a third of its time hauling trailers of all different shapes and sizes. This quarter we took the Ram Power Wagon on several trailer-less road trips and even a few rockcrawling adventures.

Hoarding Our Sought-After Bed Toy

"Dude, can I borrow the Rhino?" Be prepared to hear that a lot if you purchase one, because for some reason people think of these things as community property, in a way no one would with a truck. Typically we borrow a Rhino from Yamaha every year for Top Truck Challenge in order to run around the park, but this year we asked for one for an extended stay to get to know it better. So far, we've utilized this little truck-let in Denver, Colorado, at our sister magazine's Diesel Power Challenge, in Hollister, California, during Top Truck, and during several trips to the local desert for trail exploring, including Calico Mountains, Mammoth Lakes, and Johnson Valley. We've had a heck of a lot of fun during that time, but also gleaned a few things to note before purchasing one.

Cross-Country Crawler

As the winner of the 2012 Four Wheeler of the Year competition, the ’12 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon long-term tester has been a welcome part of our fleet. So far it’s been used as a makeshift minivan, parts hauler, desert explorer, commuter, and now, cross-country shuttle. It also served as the pre-run rig for this year’s Four Wheeler of the Year competition. That grueling recon run garnered the Jeep a new dent in the oil pan and crossmember, along with a crushed steering stabilizer, which we quickly swapped out for a new one.

A look at the all-new 2014 GM ½-ton pickups

It has been seven years since General Motors redesigned its Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra ½-ton pickups and a lot has changed in the light-truck market during that time. Customers have a new list of demands including more functionality, comfort, and power. Oh, and with higher fuel prices, improved fuel economy. With that said, there was much speculation on how GM would respond with the new-for-2014 ½-ton trucks. Well, people aren’t speculating any longer because the General has spoken with vastly redesigned trucks that the company feels delivers the things buyers want.
